Consenting Adults

Reimagining Commitment for People and Relationships That Defy Convention

What if healthy relationships aren't defined by following the right path or fitting a static relationship model—but by relationships grounded in integrity, ongoing choice, and iterative consent?

Relationship and couples therapy emerged within cultural and clinical traditions that largely centered heterosexual, monogamous partnerships. Many of the field's dominant models continue to carry assumptions about what commitment, intimacy, stability, and successful relationships should look like.

For people navigating consensual non-monogamy, kink, queer relationships, platonic partnerships, chosen family, childfree-by-choice lives, non-nesting partnerships, and other relationships beyond convention, those assumptions can leave traditional relationship guidance feeling incomplete—or simply mismatched to the lives people are actually living.

In Consenting Adults: Reimagining Commitment for People and Relationships That Defy Convention, psychologist Beth Gadomski draws on empirical research, richly illustrated case examples, and more than two decades of clinical experience to introduce the Relational Integrity Framework - an adaptive, non-prescriptive approach informed by therapeutic interventions developed after recognizing the limitations of applying static, conventionally-oriented relationship models to diverse and evolving relationships.

Offered here first for lay readers to apply within their own relationships, the framework shifts the focus from whether a relationship conforms to a prescribed structure toward how people relate within whatever structure they choose - centering integrity, accountability, self-awareness, iterative consent, and the freedom to adapt as people and relationships change.

Through engaging stories, reflective exercises, and evidence-informed insights, Consenting Adults invites readers to question inherited relationship scripts, navigate uncertainty and change, and expand their sense of what's possible.

The question isn't whether your relationship fits the model. It's whether the model has made enough room for your relationship.

About

Beth Gadomski, Psy.D., is a psychologist, author, and speaker whose work explores how we can create relationships that reflect who we actually are—not simply the expectations we inherit.

Drawing on more than two decades of clinical experience, she developed the Relational Integrity Framework, a non-prescriptive approach grounded in consent, accountability, self-awareness, authenticity, and ongoing choice. Her work integrates empirical research with a nuanced understanding of identity, attachment, trauma, sexuality, and relational systems.

Beth has held clinical positions at Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley, and her doctoral research examined the intersection of ethnic-racial and subcultural identity. These experiences continue to inform her interest in how identity, culture, and belonging shape the ways we connect.

Her work has particular relevance for people navigating consensual non-monogamy, kink, queer relationships, platonic partnerships, chosen family, childfree-by-choice lives, non-cohabiting partnerships, and other relationships beyond conventional expectations - but its central question is broader:

What changes when we stop trying to fit into static, pre-existing relationship models and start asking how can we co-create relationships that fluidily evolve?

Her forthcoming book, Consenting Adults, brings this inquiry—and the Relational Integrity Framework—to a broader audience.
